Traditional knowledge is one of big assets which can be occupied by Indonesian government to bring prosperity to the people, because the prediction of product sell value which is using genetic sources as the traditional knowledge in each year can reach US$ 800 billions. This idea was stated by Muhammad Hawin,S.H.,LL.M., Ph.D. in his speech of professor’s inauguration of Faculty of Law Universitas Gadjah Mada in Senate Building UGM on Monday, 3 August 2009. This idea was delivered in his speech entitled “Protection the traditional knowledge in Indonesia.

Besides the using of traditional knowledge, it was also stressed by this guy who was born in Bantul in 26 December 1962 that it is necessary to protect traditional knowledge, especially legal protection. Because there are many researchers who begin their researches based on traditional knowledge. Whereas their research results are then demanded for patent right.

Moreover, Husband of Fatmiatun Yulian, S.Pd. explained that Indonesian government has not firmly managed and given a protection towards the traditional knowledge. Therefore, they should revise the regulation of Intellectual Property especially Regulation No. 14 year 2001 on Patent. But the revision should be synchronized towards the international agreement so that the Indonesian government can give comprehensively and massively protections because the father of Muhammad Aufa Sabili, Asa Ahsana, Akvina Khiyara, and Akna Mumtaza studied on India experience that this country could withdraw the Patent Regulation No. 5,401, 504, on 28 March 1995 about the using of Turmeric that was given to the University of Mississippi of Medical Center because the using of turmeric is common knowledge in India’s society.
