UGM Together with School of Law USC establish Double Degree

Faculty of Law UGM together with School of Law University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia, South Carolina, establish double degree program for the students of Faculty of Law UGM in 2009. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) of this program was signed at Multimedia Room, UGM Central Office on Wednesday (20/5).
The signing of the MoU was witnessed by US ambassador, Cameron R. Hume and Indonesian Educational Minister, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibyo, M.B.A. Through this program, the students of International Undergraduate Program (IUP) UGM in the year 2011 will have a chance to get double degree from Universitas Gadjah mada (UGM) and University of South Carolina (USC). In that year UGM, IUP of Faculty of Law UGM will sent 5 students to get double degree namely L.L.B from UGM and J.D from USC. “It is the first time in Indonesia” said Cameron R. Hume to the journalists.
Meanwhile, the Minister said that international partnership between UGM and USC will establish a mutual aid in education and legal research. According to him, the quality of international standard university is shown through the partnership of across nation universities.
“This international collaboration is very synergic, because the Faculty of Law in USC is the most prestige faculty in the world, while UGM is a university which is in top 400 in the entire of the world,” the Minister said
At that moment, Bambang Sudibyo also admitted that education in the US has good quality and is very advance. It is why many experts in Indonesia are alumnus from the US colleges and universities, including himself.
“Although many Indonesian people get their Master degree and Doctoral degree from the US, alumni from Elementary School in Menteng, Jakarta, can becomes a president of the United States.” The Minister joked.
Meanwhile, the Head of UGM, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M.Eng., Ph.D. said that the establishment of double degree program between Faculty of Law UGM and USC will give advantages for both universities. He expects that in the future, such partnership can be established from other faculties and other universities in the US.
“We believe that this collaboration will make the partnership networking wide which will give advantages and solution towards Indonesian and the US people.
At this occasion, the Head of UGM made a special request to the US ambassador that on the plan of the President of the US, Barack Obama to visit Indonesia, it could be scheduled for him to visit UGM.
General Director of Education of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Fasli Djalal, said to the journalists when he was accompanying the US ambassador to American Corner, UGM’s Library, that the establishment of double degree program between UGM and USC will give opportunities to the graduates of Faculty of Law UGM to work abroad, especially in the US, because this program is not only admitted in Indonesia but also in the US. “This collaboration is especially for business and economic law” He said.
